Comments: The Peter Pan fantasy comes true. Four best buddies do comics, attract fans, hit the con circuit and write a book together about how it's done. It's interesting to see how they interlock. Guigar is the joker, Kellett the grownup, Kurtz the mercurial giant with a charming kid voice, Straub is the technician. We can learn a lot from what they say, but possibly the best lessons are in what they do. These guys know a lot about how to live.

November 2008: What a sap I was when I wrote that, idiotically offering image over substance like a cub reporter. I'm not sure what's more distressing about these guys: their lack of intellectual rigor, or their willingness to hurl insults at people when the mood strikes. They are among the major embarrassments of the trade, and the least honest.

Their lack of maturity in acknowledging serious deficiencies in their book is among the more startling failures. Kurtz's periodic web eruptions are becoming notorious, often insulting people he does not know with harsh language. Describes himself as an A--hole," as if that excuses it.

Theme: Indiana-based comics people.

Comments: Our only collective organized around a state identity, this one looks like fun. They get together in undistinguished restaurants and hang out and do jam comics. Lee Cherolis, for whom the phrase "a good egg" was first coined, is my contact person for this one.

Comments (November 2008): When the site owner pulled the plug on Comic of the Month, one of the better comic collective sites online was destroyed. The members were quick to rebuild under the Ink Spots name, with most of the previous membership making the move. A friendly group; I hope they can revive their excellent forum.

September 2008: Allows members from other collectives to join. Includes a reader popularity list, but two of the top comics have stopped updating months ago. Some members are by anyone's standards sloppy with their presentation.
